Adding Your Tray to Cart

Your custom tray may take a few seconds to process when you click Add to Cart while the required measurements and options are calculated. Wait for the cart to open and confirm the tray has been added before making another selection.

If you’re ordering multiple different trays, close the cart after each one, adjust your Movement Tray Maker options, then add the next tray.

Before You Start:

  • Measure your bases before ordering. Enter the actual base size you need in millimetres and allow a little extra clearance if required.
  • Movement trays require assembly.
  • Miniature bases are not included by default. Bases can be added as an option while building your tray.
  • Some options may become unavailable depending on selections you’ve already made. This is normal and prevents incompatible tray combinations.

How to Build Your Movement Tray

There are seven steps to creating your tray. Some selections will change the options available in later steps, so work through them in order. Use the Reset button if you want to start again.

Your tray price will appear once all required options are complete.

Step 1: Regiment Model Width & Depth

Enter the number of models across the front of the unit (Width) and the number of models along the side of the unit (Depth). Enter whole numbers only.

Step 2: TRAY STYLE
Choose the tray style that best suits your unit and how you want the models arranged.

Standard – 3 Sided
A traditional movement tray with an open rear. It includes a base plate with front and side lips. The 4mm-deep lip pieces are supplied separately with pressure-sensitive adhesive already applied, ready to position and press into place.

Standard – 4 Sided
The same as the 3 Sided tray, but with an additional rear lip that completely frames the unit.

Lance – 3 Sided
A lance formation tray with an open rear. The lip is supplied as a single solid 4mm-deep piece with pressure-sensitive adhesive already applied, ready to position and press into place.

Important — Width & Depth: Lance trays use these fields differently from standard trays. Enter the same number for both Width and Depth based on the size of the lance formation:

  • 6 models: enter 3 Width × 3 Depth
  • 10 models: enter 4 Width × 4 Depth
  • 15 models: enter 5 Width × 5 Depth

The tray will be arranged in the traditional lance formation, building from a single model front to the widest rear rank.

If Magnetic or Magflex is selected, the sheet will already be attached to the base plate. You will still need to position and attach the lip.

Lance – 4 Sided
Exactly the same lance formation as the 3 Sided version, but with a complete lip around the perimeter to frame the models.

Adaptor
Adaptor trays let models on smaller bases occupy the correct footprint for a larger base size. For example, models on 20mm square bases can be arranged as though they were on 25mm square bases.

Important — Base Size: In Step 4, enter the Adaptor Base Size you want the models converted to, not the size currently fitted to your models.

Your Current Base Adaptor Base Size — Enter This
20mm Square 25mm Square
25mm Square 30mm Square
40mm Square 50mm Square
25mm × 50mm Rectangle 30mm × 60mm Rectangle

Adaptor trays are made from two plates: a solid base plate and a top plate that positions your models within their new footprint. The top plate has pressure-sensitive adhesive applied underneath, ready for assembly.

A Grid option is also available. When selected, the converted base footprints are engraved onto the top plate, making the individual model spaces easier to see.

Conversion
Conversion trays let models on round, oval or pill-shaped bases form up into a square rank-and-file formation.

The tray is made from two plates: a solid base plate and a top plate with openings cut to suit your chosen model base size and shape.

There is approximately 1mm of material between each rank, with no material separating models side-to-side within the same rank. A 2.5mm border surrounds the outside of the formation.

A Grid option is also available. When selected, the equivalent square base positions are engraved onto the top plate, making individual model spaces easier to identify.

The top plate has pressure-sensitive adhesive applied underneath, ready for assembly.

If Magnetic or Magflex is selected, the sheet will already be attached to the base plate. You will still need to position and attach the top plate.

Skirmish – Round
Designed for units on round, oval or pill-shaped bases that move in a loose skirmish formation rather than fixed ranks.

The Width & Depth values are used as a guide when creating the tray, rather than producing a strict rank-and-file layout. Model positions are arranged in a loose, irregular pattern, with spacing between models varying from approximately 3mm to 12mm.

For example, a 3 Width × 2 Depth selection creates a six-model skirmish tray, similar to the example shown in the product images.

The tray is made from two plates: a solid base plate and a top plate with openings cut to suit your selected base size and shape.

The top plate has pressure-sensitive adhesive applied underneath, ready for assembly.

Skirmish – Square – 1/2 Inch
Designed for units that move in a loose formation, with spacing of up to 1/2 inch (12.5mm) between models.

The tray is made from two plates: a solid base plate and a top plate with openings cut to suit your selected base size and shape. A 4mm border surrounds the outside of the formation.

The top plate has pressure-sensitive adhesive applied underneath, ready for assembly.

If Magnetic or Magflex is selected, the sheet will already be attached to the base plate. You will still need to position and attach the top plate.

Skirmish – Square – 1 Inch
Exactly the same as the 1/2 version but designed for units that move in a wider loose formation, with spacing of up to 1 inch (25mm) between models.

Step 3: BASE SHAPE. Choose the shape of the miniature bases that will sit in your movement tray. These can be bases you already own or bases you choose to add in Step 5.

Step 4: BASE WIDTH & DEPTH (MM). Enter the actual size of the miniature bases that will sit in your tray, in millimetres. Enter whole numbers only. For round and square bases, only one measurement is required. For rectangle, oval and pill-shaped bases, enter both the Width and Depth. Measure your actual bases rather than relying solely on the size printed on the packaging, and allow a little extra clearance if required.

Step 5: BASES REQUIRED. If you need miniature bases supplied with your movement tray, select the appropriate option here. Some base shapes and sizes may also include slotted base options. Any bases added to your order will be made from the same material and thickness as the tray lip. Select None if you already have the bases you need.

Step 6: MATERIAL & THICKNESS. Choose the material and thickness you would like for your movement tray. Available options will depend on the tray style and other selections you have already made.

Step 7: MAGNETISING OPTIONS. Choose whether you would like a magnetising layer added to your movement tray.

None: Choose this if you don’t need a magnetising option.

Magflex Sheet & Magnets: Includes a 0.6mm flexible steel Magflex sheet with adhesive backing, plus enough rare-earth magnets for the number and size of bases in your tray.

The Magflex sheet is supplied fitted to the tray where applicable. Magnets are intended to be attached underneath your miniature bases.

The number of magnets supplied depends on base size:

  • Square or round bases under 1600mm² — 1 magnet per base
  • Square or round bases 1600mm² and larger — 4 magnets per base
  • Oval, pill or rectangular bases up to 2100mm² — 2 magnets per base
  • Oval, pill or rectangular bases over 2100mm² — 4 magnets per base

If bases are added to your order, the supplied disc magnets may be replaced with suitable cube magnets to fit the holes provided.

Magnetic Sheet: Includes a 0.9mm flexible magnetic sheet with adhesive backing. Choose this option if your models already use a compatible metal or steel base-bottom system.

Which Magnetising Option Do I Need?

The easiest way to choose is to match the tray to what is already underneath your miniature bases.

Magnetic Sheet Trays

Best suited to models using:

  • Metal or iron-based miniature bases
  • Plastic bases with steel or iron washers underneath
  • Magflex Base Bottoms, including those made using our Mag-Maker

If you are unsure which option will work with your existing basing system, feel free to contact me before ordering.

Great product however the self adhesive was insufficient and super glue was required to attach the rails

Fantastic product , Aaron was very receptive to my concept and made it a reality . I especially love the self- adhesive to the frames which removes the overspill of glue issue .

These Trays are well made, easy to put together (also easy to customise the size required on the purchase page of the site) and quite inexpensive for what you get!, I have been using Back 2 Base-ix for many years and have never been disappointed with their products. Highly recommend this company and Their Product
